In the days that followed, Madhavrao visited his mother every day, but noticed that Gopikabai was getting increasingly curt with him.
One day, Madhavrao was sitting in his palace when Nana Phadnis came to him.
âShrimant, as per your command, the fine was recovered from Malharrao Raste today.â
âDid you have to take orders for confiscation?â asked Madhavrao.
âNo, Shrimant. He paid the fine on his own. I have come to ask where we should deposit this fine.â
âGive the amount to some charitable institution, Nana. As it is, the desecrated temples are going to be rebuilt. This amount will be helpful for that,â said Madhavrao. He muttered, âThis amount is going to prove very costly for me â¦â
Nana overheard him. âWhat do you mean, Shrimant?â
âYou shall come to know in due course.â
The next day, when Madhavrao entered his palace after his bath and pooja, he saw Ramabai waiting for him.
âAre you angry with me? You seem upset,â said Madhavrao when he saw how quiet Ramabai was.
âSasubai says she is leaving today. Is it true?â asked Ramabai.
âYes,â Madhavrao affirmed with a deep sigh.
Instantly, Ramabaiâs eyes filled with tears. âIsnât there any way we can stop her from going?â
Madhavrao smiled sadly. âOnce your mother-in-law decides something, even God cannot make her change her mind. Rama, I know you are feeling sad, so imagine what condition my mind is in. You may not understand what Iâm about to say, but some day you will realise that in the events that happened, neither Matoshree nor I was wrong. But some things are bound to happen. Come on, wipe your tears. Let us go to bid farewell to her.â
Madhavrao started walking towards his motherâs palace, followed by Ramabai, wiping her eyes.
